Review of Justice League #16

“It is time for war.”

***Contains Spoilers***

I wasn’t really looking forward to this story arc so much, but now that I have been reading it I really like it. My only complaint is the narrow mindedness of the big three (Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman). Let’s face it, Batman is a genius, and Superman and Wonder Woman are both really smart and generally empathetic people. So, why is it that they can’t put themselves in Orm’s shoes? Granted he may be overreacting by their standards. That is part of the problem; they are looking at him from their point of view and judging him by their rules and traditions. Orm is doing the same. From Orm’s perspective his city was attacked without provocation and many of his people died. In response he rose up his army and is leading a counter attack against his attackers. Aquaman, being familiar with both worlds, seems to be the only one thinking clearly. The sad thing is that nobody is listening.

I am relatively sure that Orm somehow is behind the attack on Atlantis. He most likely arranged the whole thing to have an excuse to wage a war. I guess I just expect more out of superheroes of their caliber. Well, their infighting has led to their capture which is both unfortunate and fortunate at the same time. Unfortunate because it seems that Orm and the armies of Atlantis have the upper hand and are poised to sink Boston beneath the ocean. It is fortunate because we get to see the back-up Justice League.

While Cyborg gets some underwater upgrades he puts in a call to the Justice League’s reinforcements. The roster includes Element Woman, Green Arrow, Black Lightning, Vixen, Shazam, Hawkman, Zatanna, Goldrush, Black Canary, and Firestorm. This looks like a pretty good team to me. We have a member from JLI, one from JLD and one from the Birds of Prey. I have no idea who Goldrush is or what abilities she may have. There seems to be quite a lot of power on this team. Shazam is a good replacement for Superman, Firestrom and Element woman are both very powerful as well. I am really happy to see Shazam in something other than a Justice League back up story.

Speaking of Shazam Back up stories we have another installment this month. It features the first fight between Black Adam and Shazam, which does not go well for Shazam. I really wish they would just give him his own series. I love the character and hate that jack ass rejects from Justice League Detroit(Vibe) get their own book, but we get Shazam rationed out. I know I have bitched about this before so I won’t rant about it for
too long.

This may not be as big of a crossover as Rise of the Third Army or Death of the Family however it is pretty good and looks like it could have some lasting effects in the New 52.
