The Crimson Horror! A review of Doctor Who Series 7 Episode 11

The Doctor and Clara are back with another adventure this week! We also see the return of Madame Vastra, Jenny, and Strax!

Post contains spoilers!

A good episode that reminds the viewers of Doctor Who that ladies can kick ass! I have to say it wasn’t my favorite episode out there but it does a good job showcasing some female characters. Plus it is always nice to see Vastra, Jenny, and Strax. This episode is unique in that it starts off as a case that the three are working and happen to run into the Doctor and that is when things get crazy. An old sickness from the past is trying to make a come back and if they don’t act soon it might take out the whole world! So what that really means is that is any other Doctor Who episode. because when isn’t the world in danger?

Vastra, Jenny, and Strax are hired to investigate Sweetville after multiple people have turned up dead. All of the bodies have been dumped and are completely red. It is alarming to most people. But these three have been around the block a few times. After sending Jenny in undercover, she finds the Doctor there and alive. Before they can stop what is going on they must first find and save Clara who has gone missing inside the compound. It would seem that the Doctor and Clara had also seen and heard of the red bodies turning up and showed up to take a look. However they were caught and added into the program. The owner of Sweetville is trying to preserve people from a coming apocalypse that she is starting herself. The Doctor not being human does not completely become preserved but nor is he killed and is hidden away by Ada, the daughter of Mrs. Gillyflower, who runs Sweetville.

Jenny and the Doctor are able to find Clara and return her to normal. They then learn that Mrs. Gillyflower has been using the venom produced by “Mr. Sweet” who is actually a red leech. A creature from the same time period as Vastra who used to feed on her people. Mrs. Gillyflower wanted to cleanse the world of the unclean and only those allowed into Sweetville would live. She had built a rocket to release the poison into the sky above but Vastra and Jenny remove it before it launches. Afterwards in a struggle Mrs. Gillyflower falls to her death and “Mr. Sweet” leaves her sensing that her body is dying. Ada then takes her revenge on the beast.

With the day saved, The Doctor takes Clara home. However when she returns home she finds that the children she looks after have found pictures of her from her adventures with the Doctor. This includes of a picture of Clara from “The Snowmen” which was another Clara and not the Clara traveling with the Doctor currently. Along the same lines, Vastra, Jenny, and Strax do not understand how Clara can be with the Doctor. Since the three of them were there when the Clara from their time died. The Doctor leaves without explaining because at this point he doesn’t really know how to explain at all. But as we are coming close to the end of series 7 it is only a matter of time before we find out.

We have been leading up to this moment in the past few episodes. In Journey to the Center of the T.A.R.D.I.S. we see the Doctor snap and start to question Clara. Which of course she then forgot. Now we see Clara see a picture of a her that she does not remember because it wasn’t her? I have tried talking to Drew about Clara but we are both stumped. There are a lot of good fan theories out there but we are all so clueless that it could be anything at this point. Next week we will see the children Clara looks after join her and the Doctor as the go off to see the stars! And possibly run into some Cybermen!

All in all it was a good episode. Jenny, Clara, and Ada all have badass moments that remind us that the women of Doctor Who don’t always need to be helped or saved. It is a nice reminder since we haven’t had Amy and River around to remind us. However I think at this point some people are ignoring the plot and just want to know the whole story behind Clara. I know it is something that drives me crazy. I can’t wait to find out what it will be!
