Wrath of Strife: A review of Wonder Woman #25

Following the death of War, Olympus and the gods are in flux. While Wonder Woman does not want to take on the mantle of War, Apollo starts to think a world without war might be a good idea. But some other gods are not so sure. Strife seems to be the only one mourning her brother and plans to take the mantle of War herself. Back on Earth our band of heroes finally feel they can sit back and relax for a moment. But there is no rest for the wicked.

So the last time we took a look at Wonder Woman was issue #15 or #16 so here is a quick recap for those that might need it. The First Born of Zeus has returned to claim his birthright, but just about everyone is trying to stop him. He learns that Zola’s baby, now named, Zeke is the key to taking the throne. The woman Cassandra turns out to also be a child of Zeus who used to run around with Lennox. She was blessed with the voice of the gods until Lennox ripped out her throat. After Wonder Woman and Orion fight the First Born they decide to retreat. Orion takes them to New Genesis. However, while in the boom tube, Lennox leaves them to stop the First Born from following. On New Genesis Wonder Woman is healed and the rest recover. When they go to leave Orion is ordered to take Zeke. While he does this, he leaves at the last-minute with Wonder Woman and the others. Upon returning to Earth however the city is in chaos and the First Born’s army is attacking. During the finally show down with the First Born they find out that Lennox did die. War shows up to fight and was about to be killed by the First Born. In the end Wonder Woman sees her window and stabs them both. Since she killed War she inherits the mantle of the god of War. The leave the First Born to Apollo and go on to lay War to rest.

Now back to our story. Strife longs for revenge on Wonder Woman for the death of War and turns to the Smith for help. Meanwhile, Cassandra is looking for the First Born again. However, she has kidnapped Milan to do so. While the rest of the gang are settling into their new life they are visited by both Strife and Siracca. Strife comes with gifts that I feel are not actually gifts. She has something planned. Siracca comes seeking Wonder Woman’s aid. When they realize that Cassandra has Milan they quickly take off after them. This leaves Zola, Zeke, and Strife all alone. This could turn out very badly.

It is nice to see that Wonder Woman is still Wonder Woman. Meaning that we still have a lot of action from the other gods. It was one of the things that drew me in the first place. I am sad to see Lennox go but death happens. I want to say we are done worrying about the First Born but I don’t think that will be the case. Right now he is chained up by Apollo but he is cocky and Cassandra is back on Earth working towards finding him. The only good news is that baby Zeke does seem to be finally safe. He might have a super crazy family but don’t we all?
