Top Level Clearance: A look at Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Yesterday I talked about Arrow but that isn’t the only new show to catch my eye. Due to the huge success of Marvel’s movies it was only a matter of time until they thought about making a move onto tv. Now they show has gotten mixed reviews from people I have talked to about it. It isn’t perfect but I have enjoyed it greatly so far.

 *Post contains spoilers*

In the past couple of years Marvel has become a huge name in entertainment. Outside of comics they are doing extremely well with their movies. Avengers was so big they were able to start looking into other projects they might not have considered before. The show is about 12 episodes in and I believe they ordered 21 or 22 so they are about halfway through their first season and I am loving the show personally. Now the show itself doesn’t really deal with any heroes we know of but deals more with S.H.I.E.L.D. and how normal agents deal with a rapidly changing world. This doesn’t mean we won’t hear or see heroes or characters from the movies. Both Maria Hill and Nick Fury have already appeared in the show and the team on the show is led by none other than Agent Phil Coulson.

I know what you are thinking, “Didn’t he die?” And I now I want you to think about how many characters in comic book universes stay dead. The show does eventually tell you how Coulson is once again alive. Coulson isn’t alone he has an amazing team working with him. There are Agents Ward and May who are both experienced field agents. The brain of the team comes in the form of Agents Fitz and Simmons, two young agents who are incredibly brilliant. However there is one wild card on the team, Skye, who is a hacker that Coulson saw great potential in. She is currently training to become an agent after joining the team.

The team is formed after Coulson heals back up after the Battle of New York. Fury lets Coulson pick his own team and take to the skies! No really, they work out of a huge ass plane. It is pretty sweet, I totally want one. They deal with problems of a changing world in their own way. It took them a bit to start working as a team but they are now unique inside S.H.I.E.L.D. A lot of the members of the team have come a long way as far as character development goes in a short time. Like I said before it is only 12 episodes in and I really hope it gets picked up for another season. Because they are doing great things with the Marvel Universe. Having this show allows them to expand their movie universe even more! They have already had an episode that took place after Thor: The Dark World in which the team was part of the clean up and I read the other day that they will be having a connecting episode with Captain America: The Winter Solider.

The show so far as had the team just doing missions like anyone else inside S.H.I.E.L.D. however they are starting to have more and more contact with a group called Centipede. They seem to be trying to create of type of Super Solider with a mix of different types of material and ideas, Including Gama radiation and Extremis. I wonder were they got those ideas from? Along the way we also learn more about the characters on the team and their own story lines. Coulson struggles with being alive again, May struggles with being back in the field and, Skye’s search for who she is and who her parent were.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is what I hope Arrow and Flash will become. However it is already clear from recent years that Marvel is smarter  than DC when it comes to movies. If you enjoyed the Avengers movies or Marvel in general I suggest you check out this show. The only problem I have had with the show is that for a while it seemed that Ward and Skye were going to be a thing. Thankfully they have started to pull away from that and I hope it stays that way!
