The Only Light in the Darkness: A Review of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 1 Episode 19

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. I want to formal apologize to you. I have neglected you for far to long. I have made a mistake and I hope that you can take me back into your loving arms. Just a heads up, if you aren’t watching this show you are doing it wrong.

Alright so it has been six episodes since I last reviewed Agents and I feel terrible. Mostly because I spent the morning catching up and it was all so good! But somethings did happen that I wasn’t a huge fan of, but by the end of this episode I was okay with. I am also going to take some time and talk about how wonderful Marvel has done. But let’s get down to this episode. So S.H.I.E.L.D. has basically fallen apart and Coulson and his team aren’t sure what to do, or at the very least, which problem to handle first. However when Ward brings the news that the Fridge was broken into and the prisoners were let loose it becomes clear to Coulson what they must do. When Coulson hears that Marcus Daniels is one of those who has escaped he takes out a force to take him down.

Now these seems oddly personal? I am not sure if that is the right word, for Coulson. And soon it makes sense when we learn the woman who Daniels is obsessed with is none other than Coulson’s mystery lover the cello player! Well she has a name actually, it is Audrey Nathan. While Triplett, Fitz, Simmons and Coulson work on taking him down and keeping Audrey safe things at the base get crazy. First off May leaves, getting sick of Coulson not trusting her. These leaves Ward to be a complete scum bag the rest of the episode.

Ward has a small window of time to get Skye to unlock the hard drive and it is turning out to be harder than he hoped. To make things worse Skye wants to hack the NSA to see what happened at the Fridge. This leaves Ward no choice and he springs into action. He first kills Agent Koenig as Skye finishes her hack. He then has a heart to heart with Skye that might be real and truthful? However as Ward starts to bleed he goes to the bathroom giving Skye time to figure things out. She ends up finding Koenig’s body and puts all the pieces together. But Skye is a total bamf. She plays it cool and plays along with Ward. He then takes her to “meet the team” where she will be forced to unlock the hard drive. Which of course is what Ward needs. The rest of the team returns to find everyone gone. May meets up with her mother and begins her search for Maria Hill.

Okay so first let’s talk about Ward. Now in the past few episodes we have learned that Ward has been with Hydra this whole time but while on his mission he caught feelings for Skye. So while he has returned to basically kill the rest he wants to be with Skye. I have stated before that my only worry with this show is that they would make Skye and Ward a thing. They came so close to having that happen. However Skye caught on just in the nick of time. I really hope they don’t use Ward’s feeling for her as a redemption story. I never cared for his character anyways.

But enough about shipping, now we can get the real nerd stuff. I have talked about how this show was a brilliant move by Marvel. Their movies have already been amazing and their continuity between them is something that has yet to be matched. This show only adds to that. First with returning actors from the movies. Then with the follow-up episode after Thor 2 and now tie-ins with Winter Soldier. They continue to do such an amazing connecting the show and their movies it really is just mind-blowing.

Again the second half of this season has blown me away. If you haven’t watched you should start now.
